Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the Harbeth Monitor 40.5 XD?
A: The Harbeth Monitor 40.5 XD is a three-way stand-mount reference loudspeaker featuring RADIAL4 cone technology in a 200 mm midrange driver, a 300 mm Harbeth-made bass unit, a 25 mm ferrofluid-cooled tweeter, and a newly refined crossover. It covers 35 Hz to 20 kHz within ±3 dB, has 86 dB sensitivity, works with amplifiers from 35 watts per channel, and handles up to 650 W programme power. Cabinets are handmade with premium natural veneers. The Monitor 40.5 XD is available at Vinyl Sound, an authorized Harbeth dealer in Toronto, Canada.
Q: What is RADIAL4 and how does it differ from previous RADIAL generations?
A: RADIAL4 is the most advanced generation of Harbeth's proprietary cone diaphragm material, used in the 200 mm midrange driver of the Monitor 40.5 XD. Each RADIAL generation has progressively reduced the cone's contribution to coloration and distortion while improving clarity and detail. RADIAL4 represents the current state of Harbeth's material science research and sets a new benchmark for transparency and lifelike tonal accuracy from a drive unit. Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada can arrange a listening demonstration of the Monitor 40.5 XD.
Q: What amplifier works best with the Harbeth Monitor 40.5 XD?
A: Harbeth recommends amplifiers from 35 watts per channel, and the Monitor 40.5 XD's 86 dB sensitivity and 6 to 8-ohm impedance make it compatible with a wide range of amplifiers. The Monitor 40.5 XD scales with amplifier quality, from modest designs to reference-grade amplifiers. Browse our range of integrated amplifiers at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada, or contact us for personalised pairing recommendations based on your room size and musical preferences.
Q: What stands should I use with the Harbeth Monitor 40.5 XD?
A: Harbeth recommends stands that bring the tweeter level with the listening position. The tweeter is located 660 mm up from the base of the cabinet, so the required stand height is your seated ear height minus 660 mm. Contact Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada for stand recommendations compatible with the Monitor 40.5 XD.
Q: Do the veneer finishes vary between cabinets?
A: Yes. Harbeth uses genuine natural wood veneers, which vary in colour, shade, and grain structure from cabinet to cabinet and batch to batch. This is a characteristic of real wood and a mark of Harbeth's commitment to authentic materials rather than synthetic alternatives. If finish consistency between a pair is important, Harbeth's production team selects veneers for the best possible match within each matched pair.

All-New RADIAL4 Cone Technology
Every Harbeth loudspeaker is built around the company's foundational insight: that the diaphragm material is the single most critical determinant of a loudspeaker's sonic character. Since 1977, Harbeth has pursued this through research in material science, resulting in successive generations of RADIAL cone technology. The Monitor 40.5 XD introduces RADIAL4, the most advanced iteration, in the 200 mm midrange driver, for lifelike tonal accuracy, clarity, and freedom from coloration. The 300 mm bass unit and 25 mm ferrofluid-cooled tweeter are also Harbeth-made.
Refined Crossover for Greater Openness and Clarity
The Monitor 40.5 XD features a newly redesigned crossover optimised for the RADIAL4 midrange unit and the 25 mm ferrofluid-cooled tweeter, for a speaker that is more open, more clear, and more tonally accurate than its predecessor. The crossover refinements work with the RADIAL4 driver to create a more lifelike, immersive musical experience, with a soundstage presented with natural coherence across the full frequency range.
Handmade Cabinetry with Premium Veneers
Each Monitor 40.5 XD cabinet is handmade by Harbeth's production technicians and finished in premium veneers that are individually sourced, inspected, and selected for quality of grain, shade consistency, and surface character. Veneers vary naturally in colour, shade, and grain structure, a consequence of using genuine wood rather than synthetic alternatives. Available in Black Ash Satin, Cherry, Walnut, Oak, and Rosewood, the Monitor 40.5 XD is both a reference acoustic instrument and a piece of furniture.
