Frequently Asked Questions
What is DeVore Fidelity?
DeVore Fidelity is a Brooklyn-based, high-end speaker brand founded by John DeVore in 2000, handcrafted in small batches and praised by Stereophile and audiophiles worldwide for exceptional musicality. The brand is especially known for designing speakers that pair beautifully with low-power tube amplifiers, a rarer trait most speaker brands don't prioritize.
What's the difference between the Orangutan and Gibbon series?
These are DeVore Fidelity's two main speaker families. The Orangutan series (O/93, O/96, O/Bronze, O/Reference) uses a high-sensitivity, wide-baffle design specifically built to be driven by very low-power amplifiers, including single-digit-watt tube amps. The Gibbon series (Gibbon Super Nine, Gibbon X "Ten") uses a more conventional multi-driver cabinet design, still efficient but voiced for a wider range of amplifier types, including solid-state.
Why are DeVore speakers known for pairing well with tube amplifiers?
Most speakers need real power to sound their best, which rules out low-wattage tube amps for many listeners. DeVore's Orangutan models in particular are designed around very high sensitivity, meaning they need far less power to reach a satisfying volume, so a modest single-ended triode amplifier can drive them properly, something most speaker brands don't design around at all.
What's the difference between the O/93, O/96, O/Bronze, and O/Reference?
These scale up in cabinet size, driver complexity, and refinement while sharing the same high-sensitivity Orangutan design philosophy. The O/93 and O/96 are the more accessible entry points into the Orangutan line. The O/Bronze steps up in cabinet materials and driver quality, and the O/Reference is DeVore Fidelity's flagship expression of the Orangutan design, built without compromise for the most demanding systems and rooms.
What's the difference between the Gibbon Super Nine and Gibbon X "Ten"?
The Gibbon Super Nine is an established model in DeVore's Gibbon range, known for a balanced, musical presentation in mid-sized rooms. The Gibbon X "Ten" is a newer, larger expression of the same Gibbon design philosophy, offering more scale and low-end extension for bigger rooms.
Do DeVore Fidelity speakers need a subwoofer?
No. Both the Orangutan and Gibbon lines are voiced as complete, full-range speakers, with the wide-baffle Orangutan design in particular known for surprisingly deep, well-controlled bass for its size. A subwoofer isn't part of the intended listening experience with these speakers.
Where are DeVore Fidelity speakers made?
DeVore Fidelity is based in Brooklyn, New York, where founder John DeVore's team hand-builds each speaker in small batches rather than on a mass-production line.
Can I audition DeVore Fidelity speakers in person in Toronto, and is there financing available?
Yes. Vinyl Sound carries the full DeVore Fidelity lineup at our Richmond Hill showroom, so you can hear the Orangutan and Gibbon series for yourself before you buy. Flexible financing is available through Affirm, and every DeVore Fidelity speaker comes with full manufacturer warranty coverage.
