Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista Vinyl 2 Phono Preamplifier

Nu-Vista Vinyl 2 is the new flagship of Musical Fidelity's phono preamplifiers, an ultra-high-performance, highly accurate MM/MC phono stage with a discrete Class A nuvistor tube stage. Compared to its predecessor, the Nu-Vista Vinyl, the Vinyl 2 is now discrete and fully balanced throughout. It's designed so you cannot overload the input stage or run into practical output limitations — its purpose is singular, to be a faithful conduit for the artist's intent. Sits alongside the Nu-Vista DAC as part of the Nu-Vista source range, and can be powered by the optional Nu-Vista Uni PSU. As an authorized Musical Fidelity dealer in Toronto, Canada, Vinyl Sound can help you match this phono preamp to your turntable and cartridge.

Key Features

  • Fully balanced and fully discrete design
  • 3-stage gain design, Class A discrete transistor circuitry
  • 8x 7586 nuvistor tubes in a balanced buffer circuit
  • MM (40, 43dB) and MC (60, 63dB) gain, each with a +6dB option
  • Split-passive EQ stage, in two separate stages for better impedance matching and accuracy
  • RIAA, DECCA, and COLUMBIA EQ curves
  • Two-step subsonic filter (off, mild, standard)
  • Independent RCA and XLR output stages — use both simultaneously
  • 2x RCA inputs, 2x balanced XLR inputs, each independently set for MM/MC and loading, with settings stored per input
  • Discrete input power filtering and DC blocking circuitry
  • Optional connection for the external Nu-Vista Uni PSU (sold separately)
  • Colour display with loading settings and selected input, dimmable
  • Nu-Vista remote control, machined from solid

Fully Balanced, Fully Discrete Design

The phono pre-amplification uses three gain stages powered by fully Class A discrete transistor circuitry, feeding into a fully balanced discrete Class A Nuvistor stage on a separate board for each channel. A fully balanced design carries a hot (+) and cold (-) signal, both containing the same musical information, letting the amplifier subtract out any noise picked up along the way. Unlike a "pseudo-balanced" design that combines the + and - signals before processing, Nu-Vista Vinyl 2 treats the + and - sections of each channel independently — doubling the amplifier sections, PCB space, and component count compared to a single-ended design, in exchange for excellent noise, error, and interference suppression.

Split-Passive EQ with RIAA, DECCA, and COLUMBIA

The EQ stage is completely passive and split into two separate stages, a more costly design to implement but one that ensures a more accurate representation of the ideal EQ curve with better impedance matching and lower deviation. Alongside the standard RIAA curve, Nu-Vista Vinyl 2 adds the less common DECCA and COLUMBIA curves, useful for period recordings mastered to those standards.

Extreme Cartridge Loading Options

Each RCA or XLR input can be individually set for MM or MC and its own loading, with settings remembered per input. Gain ranges from 40dB (100x voltage amplification) up to 69dB (3690x voltage amplification), switched cleanly via signal relays, while input capacitance and impedance are switched using JFET transistors. This lets Nu-Vista Vinyl 2 be matched to virtually any cartridge and integrated cleanly into your system, without practical noise, distortion, or overload issues even at the highest gain settings.

Power Supply

Nu-Vista Vinyl 2 uses an encapsulated toroidal transformer purpose-designed for delicate phono signals, with low core saturation and very low electromagnetic radiation, alongside industrial-grade power sockets with EMI filtering and DC blocking to eliminate transformer hum. Each discrete amp stage has its own DC servo, and the preamp is powered by two symmetrical, low-noise power supplies (one per channel), all passively filtered and regulated. For further noise performance, it can optionally be powered by the Nu-Vista Uni PSU, which moves the AC mains supply into its own separate enclosure.

Reviews

"Musical Fidelity goes for absolute authenticity; there is less colouration and greater neutrality. A phono preamplifier that leaves no stone unturned and will satisfy the most discerning vinylistas." — Editors, FWD, April 2024
"There's air, spades of headroom, dynamics for days, and a beautifully clean insight… If you can afford it, this exceptional phono stage is simply a no brainer." — Barry J. Johnston, Soundstage Australia, December 2024
"This is without a doubt, one the best pieces of hi-fi equipment I have had my hands on, period. A well-balanced and deeply engaging soundstage, a blissful array of subtle, detailed nuances and layer upon layer of divine instrument separation." — Barry J. Johnston, Soundstage Australia, October 2024
"The bass moved into the depths, the stereo picture grew in all directions, the sound itself was as if denser and saturated. The emotional component was better manifested, the voices sounded more natural, warmer." — Nikolay Efremov, Salon AudioVideo, May 2026

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use MM and MC cartridges with this?
Yes, each input can be independently set for MM (40/43dB, +6dB option) or MC (60/63dB, +6dB option), with settings stored per input, along with adjustable loading for precise cartridge matching.

Can I use RCA and XLR outputs at the same time?
Yes, the RCA and XLR outputs have independent stages, so you can connect and use both simultaneously.

Can I upgrade the power supply later?
Yes, Nu-Vista Vinyl 2 can optionally be powered by the separately sold external Nu-Vista Uni PSU for improved noise performance.

How does this compare to the M8x Vinyl?
M8x Vinyl uses a fully discrete, fully balanced solid-state design. Nu-Vista Vinyl 2 uses a nuvistor tube output stage instead, positioning it as the flagship of the tube-hybrid Nu-Vista range rather than the solid-state M-series.
