Musical Fidelity X-Tube

X-Tube is a pure Class A triode tube line stage, connected between your source and amplifier to enhance audio signal quality and add tube-like tonal character to any line source. It's the return of Musical Fidelity's X-profile aluminium die-cast chassis, first seen on the revered Musical Fidelity X10D tube output buffer designed by founder Antony Michaelson, and the first in a new series of X-products. Connectivity is simple: 1x RCA input, 1x RCA output, and an RCA bypass, with the external power supply reworked and moved into the chassis for a cleaner setup. As an authorized Musical Fidelity dealer in Toronto, Canada, Vinyl Sound can help you determine whether an X-Tube is the right addition to your system.

Key Features

  • Pure Class A triode tube line stage
  • 2x E88CC (6922) triode tubes, single-ended processing
  • Adds tube-like tonal character, depth, and richness to any digital or analogue line source
  • High input impedance, low output impedance for ideal impedance matching
  • Direct mains input — no external power supply, for a cleaner setup
  • X-profile extruded aluminium chassis, designed to resist resonance
  • 1x RCA input, 1x RCA output, plus RCA bypass

Why Add a Tube Buffer?

Many modern streamers, DACs, and CD players achieve strong price points by cutting hardware costs, often relying on cheap integrated IC output stages that struggle to properly drive line inputs on many amplifiers. X-Tube's clean, high-impedance tube input places minimal strain on a connected source's output stage, while its clean, low-impedance tube output buffer drives any low- or high-impedance amplifier input with ease. Musical Fidelity positions it as a way to let a source's digital-to-analog conversion perform to its full potential even when its own analogue output stage is holding it back — useful with CD players and DACs, phono stages, streamers, preamps with uncertain impedance matching, and even as a stereo enhancer for the front L/R channels of a home theater AV receiver.

Technical Design

X-Tube uses two E88CC (6922) triode tubes arranged so both process the entire signal in a single-ended manner, which Musical Fidelity states can produce a faster transient response with minimal distortion on rapid volume changes. Tubes naturally have higher input impedance than solid-state devices, improving impedance matching and maximizing power transfer while minimizing signal loss. This also provides a degree of isolation between the amplification circuitry and the connected load, helping protect an amplifier from reactive loads and reducing the potential for instability. The tonal character tubes introduce — often described as warmer, due to an emphasis on even-order rather than odd-order harmonics — is intended to add depth and richness while potentially reducing listening fatigue over long sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I connect this to my system?
Take the analogue output from your existing source (analogue or digital) into the X-Tube's input, then connect the X-Tube's output into your amplifier. The RCA bypass is available if you want to compare with the tube stage out of the circuit.

Does adding a tube stage add distortion or noise?
No — X-Tube measures at less than 0.003% distortion (10Hz-20kHz), better than 96dB unweighted residual noise, and a frequency response of 20Hz-80kHz (+0/-0.3dB), with crosstalk better than 95dB. Musical Fidelity states these figures are better than most source devices, so the tube stage doesn't measurably alter the signal beyond its intended tonal character.

What sources does this work best with?
Budget streamers, DACs, and CD players using low-cost integrated output stages benefit most, since X-Tube's high-impedance tube input is easy for these components to drive properly. It's equally useful for phono stages, preamps, and as a stereo enhancer feeding a home theater amp's front L/R channels.
