Rega Nd9 Moving Magnet Cartridge with Boron Cantilever

The Rega Nd9 draws on decades of expertise in cartridge and cantilever design to deliver the highest-performing moving magnet cartridge Rega has ever produced. The design team introduced a Boron rod cantilever with a fine line stylus profile based on the reference Aphelion 2 moving coil cartridge. The Boron cantilever offers exceptional stiffness and low mass for ultra-fast response and outstanding playback accuracy. Each Nd9 is meticulously hand-made in the UK. Available now at Vinyl Sound Canada, and as a factory-fitted option on the Planar 8 turntable.

A master of detail

The Nd9 uses Rega's most advanced fine line nude diamond profile, bonded to a Boron rod cantilever for maximum musical detail retrieval. This exceptionally small-radii monocrystalline diamond has a minor radius of just 3 microns viewed from the top and 30 microns in the vertical from the front. The tiny contact area allows immediate response to very small changes in the groove, retrieving exceptional levels of detail.

Boron cantilever

The Nd9's Boron cantilever is fitted with the precision fine line nude diamond stylus for the ultimate in tracking accuracy. The challenge of connecting the Nd magnet to a solid Boron rod was solved by working with a famous watchmaker to manufacture an ultra-fine connecting tube with different diameters at each end. Boron is exceptionally light for faster reaction to the record surface and highly rigid for its mass, so it bends less and transmits motion more accurately with less distortion.

Nd magnet, generator, and body

The Nd range is the first moving magnet design to use a Neodymium (Nd) N55 magnet, the world's most powerful commercially available magnet, delivering extra power over standard bar-magnet designs. New generator geometry with perfect symmetry gives highly accurate channel balance, and an optimised pole gap provides superior linearity, cross-talk, and a far wider soundstage. Miniaturised parallel coils are wound in house with 38-micron wire and 1275 turns for a low-inductance, low-impedance generator. The assembly is housed in a zero-tolerance glass-filled PPS body, uses the Rega 3-point mounting system, and is supplied in 100% recyclable packaging.

Factory-fitted option and rebuild scheme

The Nd9 is offered as a factory-fitted option on the multi-award-winning Rega Planar 8 turntable at a discounted rate compared to buying separately. Rega's unique pivot pad design eliminates the mechanical joint between the stylus housing and the main body for improved tracking and stability, and if the cartridge is ever damaged or worn, it can be returned to a Rega dealer for a rebuild fitted with a new cantilever, stylus, and pivot pad, each fully tested as a new cartridge. Every Rega product carries a Lifetime Limited Warranty.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Rega Nd9?
The Rega Nd9 is the highest-performing moving magnet cartridge Rega has ever made and the flagship of the Nd range. It combines a Neodymium N55 magnet, a fine line nude diamond stylus based on the reference Aphelion 2 moving coil, and a Boron rod cantilever for ultra-fast response, outstanding tracking, and exceptional detail.

What is the difference between the Nd9 and the Nd7?
Both use the Neodymium N55 magnet and the same fine line nude diamond stylus profile. The key difference is the cantilever: the Nd9 uses a stiffer, lower-mass Boron rod cantilever for faster, more accurate motion transfer and lower distortion, while the Nd7 uses an aluminium cantilever. The Nd9 is the flagship and is factory-fitted on the Planar 8, while the Nd7 is offered on the Planar 6 and 8.

Why does a Boron cantilever matter?
Boron is exceptionally light and highly rigid for its mass. A lighter cantilever reacts faster to changes in the record surface, and a more rigid cantilever bends less, so it transmits the stylus motion more accurately with less distortion. This gives the Nd9 its speed, precision, and detail.

How does the Nd range compare, from Nd3 to Nd9?
All share the Neodymium N55 magnet and Rega's generator design. The Nd3 has a bonded elliptical stylus, the Nd5 a nude elliptical, the Nd7 a fine line nude diamond on an aluminium cantilever, and the Nd9 a fine line nude diamond on a Boron cantilever. Factory-fit options rise with the model, up to the Planar 8 for the Nd9.

Which turntables is the Nd9 compatible with?
The Nd9 is a moving magnet cartridge suitable for turntables with a compatible tonearm and an MM phono stage. It is offered factory-fitted on the Rega Planar 8, and works with any MM phono input on a receiver, integrated amplifier, or standalone phono stage.
