Ultimate precision

The RB Titanium achieves near-frictionless movement horizontally and vertically while having no measurable free play in the bearing assemblies. It uses a new one-piece titanium vertical bearing housing and titanium vertical spindle assembly, completed with a tungsten balance weight shaft and balance weight. As with all Rega tonearms, each one is meticulously hand-built. The RB Titanium uses Rega's highest-graded bearings, each set hand-selected to be an interference fit with the paired spindle, matching both inside and outside diameters, a Rega-developed method of increasing the detail retrieved from the record surface and maximising the performance of the tonearm and cartridge.

The importance of zero play in the bearings

Rega is famed for its tonearm designs, and one unique characteristic is near-frictionless movement with no measurable free play in the bearings (in reality one or two microns of pre-load). Under an electron microscope, a stereo LP shows microscopic ridges the stylus tracks; the length of a ridge depends on its frequency and its height on its amplitude. Toward the centre of an LP, a 10kHz signal is just 26 microns long and, if quiet, may be under 10 microns high. If a tonearm has 10 microns of movement in its bearings, reading those bumps becomes difficult and musical vibration is lost in arm movement. Removing even microns of play is why Rega has invested over thirty years in this area of tonearm design.
